Common STDs & Symptoms

Know the signs and symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases and infections.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is one of the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infections, and most chlamydial infections are asymptomatic, with up to 75% of females and 50% of males exhibiting no symptoms. Symptoms can include painful urination, abnormal discharge, abnormal urine, pain during sex, bleeding between periods, lower abdominal cramps, or testicular pain and swelling.

Treatment: This infection is treated with antibiotics.

* It is recommended to get tested 1-2 times per year if you are sexually active

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a very common bacterial sexually transmitted disease that can affect the vagina, penis, rectum or throat. Symptoms include lower abdominal discomfort, pain with urination resembling a bladder infection, abnormal discharge, swelling of penis, anal itching, or swelling of testicles.

Treatment: This infection is treated with antibiotics.

Syphilis

Syphilis is a bacterial infection transmitted sexually. Syphilis presents different symptoms at different stages of infection. Stage 1: Symptoms include a painless ulcer or sore on vagina or penis that typically resolves in 2 weeks. Stage 2: Symptoms include a full body rash that involves palms and soles. Stage 3: neurosyphilis affects the brain and neurologic system and is not treatable at this stage.

Treatment: It is important to screen for syphilis to be able to diagnosis this infection in Stage 1 or 2 while treatment with antibiotics is possible.

HIV 1 & 2 Test

HIV Type 1 and 2 sexually transmitted viral infections that can progress to AIDS if undiagnosed and untreated. Early symptoms of HIV infection fatigue, sore throat, body rash, fever, swollen glands. Once you are exposed to HIV, it usually takes about 3 weeks in most humans to “seroconvert” or start having symptoms described as “flu-like.”

Treatment: If you test positive, it is recommended to consult with your doctor or infectious disease specialist for initiating antiviral treatment.

Hepatitis A, B & C

All types of hepatitis are caused by a virus and can be spread through by bodily fluids. Symptoms of types A, B, and C may include fatigue, nausea, poor appetite, belly pain, a mild fever, or yellow skin or eyes (jaundice). When hepatitis B and C become chronic, they may cause no symptoms for years. By the time there are any warning signs, the liver may already be damaged.

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Type 1 & 2

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 is a viral infection that is spread through contact of bodily fluids, mostly through saliva. It is also known as oral/lip herpes or the common cold sore. It is more contagious when you have an active sore. Symptoms typically present with a painful bump or cluster of tiny blisters on your lip and skin border or can present with small painful canker sores inside your mouth. Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 is a viral infection that is spread through sexual contact (bodily fluids or skin-to-skin). It is also known as genital herpes. Symptoms include painful clusters of blisters or ulcers near your vagina, rectum, thighs, or scrotum (anywhere in your genital region). It is common to feel burning, tingling, or stinging sensation in your genital region. Mild flu-like symptoms are also common days before the rash occurs.
